The Construction Safety Net or Construction Safety Mesh is a safety system taken against the falling of people, objects, or various items in various locations. The Construction Safety Net, tensioned in horizontal or vertical configuration in hazardous areas, is a highly reliable safety and protection system against primary falls, equipped with a high-durability mesh and connecting devices.
According to the recently enacted Law No. 6331 on Occupational Health and Safety, the use of safety nets is mandatory. Persons or institutions that do not take safety net and other security measures are held responsible under the relevant laws. In addition, due to financial, moral and all legal obligations, public and private institutions do not give the necessary work permit to companies and employees without safety equipment.
Construction Safety Net Types and Usage Areas
Construction Safety Net is currently used in many areas today. There are different types according to the place and purpose of use. For example;
The nets used as work safety net or work safety net are a network system that prevents people and goods from falling, especially in factories and similar large-scale workplaces.
Nets preferred for shelf safety as shelf safety net; It is a net system that provides high strength against horizontal or vertical movements in order to prevent goods from falling from shelves in product warehouses in hospitals, large shopping malls and factories or in working places belonging to large business centres.
It is used as balcony netting to ensure human safety against possible falls and injuries in many areas of life such as balconies, stairs and building spaces in schools, residences and workplaces, pools or ski slopes.
Construction Safety Net Standards
In many areas of life as well as in construction areas, there are certain standards for a network system used against falling people or materials. This measure taken against falls in construction sites with construction safety nets must comply with TSE 1263-1 and TSE 1263-2 standard values in terms of raw material, production method and application method.
Of these standards, TS EN 1263-1 also applies to safety nets and accessories used in construction and installation works to protect against a fall at a higher point. It specifies safety requirements and test methods and is based on the performance characteristics of polypropene and polyamide fibres. It requires that the materials used in the nets of the system in question should not have a significant reduction in mechanical properties between -10 °C and +40 °C. However, this European Standard is not applicable for the installation of construction safety nets. It covers the safety requirements for the positioning of safety nets according to the manufacturer’s instructions for use and product specifications and for the testing of safety nets system T, system S, system V and system U in accordance with EN 1263-1. Small safety nets with an area of less than 35 m2 and a shortest side of less than 5 m and included in system S in accordance with EN 1263-1 are outside the scope of this standard.
Matters to be Considered When Determining Construction Safety Net Technical Specifications;
- Material content used,
- Thread thickness,
- Eye range of the safety net,
- Production method (Knotted hand knitting / Knotless machine knitting etc.)
- Standards (TSE 1263-1 and TSE 1263-2),
- Configuration (U, S, V or T Type etc.),
- Carrying capacity.
Specifying these features mentioned above shows how safe and preferable the product is.
Safety Net Prices and Lifetime
It varies depending on the size of the net in m² and the amount of fasteners required for assembly, if any. Prices vary according to the size of the net to be determined according to the needs and usage areas.
Construction Safety net maintains its feature for about 10 years according to the material it is produced. Safety net systems are security systems that can be used for many years thanks to their production method and raw materials used in production.
The raw material of the ropes used in the production of construction safety nets is very important in terms of the high strength and long life of the net. The rope thickness and eye spacing to be used varies according to the place of application and intended use. For example; The thickness and mesh spacing of the balcony net used against children’s falls and the nets to be used to protect adults such as construction workers are preferred differently. If the load to be carried against falls is heavy, the rope thickness is increased in safety systems such as safety nets and the eye gap is narrowed in parallel. Although nets produced from low strength raw materials such as Polypropylene and low-balanced Polyester are cheaper than Polyamide nets, they pose a big problem in terms of safety. Using nets produced with unsafe raw material contents while buying or using the product to be used for safety is a fatal mistake that should not be made in vital safety systems such as safety nets. It is a priority for people or institutions purchasing Construction Safety Net to question the raw material of the net.
